Originally designed to allow the nobility of the 18th Century to grow exotic plants and citrus fruit trees, brought to England from the warmer countries overseas, hence the name. Orangeries were generally stone structures with windows and doors and a glass roof, designed to maximise the rays and warmth of the sun. Without the product limitations of the 18th Century and today’s technology we can produce orangeries that will sit comfortably on most properties. Having `chunky` corner and intermediate columns and a low pitch lantern style roof with a deep perimeter frieze, an orangery provides an elegant alternative to a traditional extension making an ideal addition to the kitchen area.
